Spirit of ‘76
Dear Miss Monroe: Provided you will allow me to use small letters at the beginning of my
lines, I submit the following excellent American poem to you for publication in your
paying magazine:
Spirit of ‘76
Her father
built a bridge
over
the Chicago River
but she
built a bridge
over the moon.
This, as you will at once recognize, is an excellent poem and very American. I sincerely
hope no prehistoric prosodic rules will bar it from publication. Yours,

Querida Srta. Monroe: Siempre y cuando me permita usted usar minúsculas al comienzo
de los versos, le presento el siguiente excelente poema americano para su posible
publicación, previo pago en su revista :
Espíritu del 76
Su padre
construyó
un puente
sobre
el río Chicago,
ella en cambio
construyó un puente
sobre la luna.
Como reconocerá usted sin titubeos, se trata de un poema excelente y muy americano.
